Five Tips for Flawless Fall Fashion

Five Tips for Flawless Fall Fashion

Let’s talk about Fall fashion done right! Fall is a favorite season for many of us, and who can resist the lure of comfy, cozy, sweaters, boots, and gorgeous autumn looks?

Let’s address 5 Fall Fashion Tips to help you look your best as the weather drops!

1) Good undergarments matter! This applies to any season, but as it gets colder and the sweaters, turtlenecks and leggings appear, taking care to select well fitting, seamless, and flattering undergarments is essential. You might be thinking this is a no-brainer. But, take into consideration that some chunkier sweaters and cardigans won’t work well with all bras. I’m a huge fan of comfy, sports-type bras, especially ones with soft cups and zip fronts. Unfortunately, these do not work well with chunky knit sweaters and cardigans. They create a chest shelf, or uni-boob, if you will, that unless you’re super petite up top, will not flatter your figure. Same goes with super padded or push-up bras and form fitting tops, because they intentionally add bulk to your chest, they might also unintentionally add bulk to your upper arms too. Lacy bras and bralettes under form fitting turtlenecks or tops should also be reconsidered. Ever been asked if you’re too cold? Yeah…

You also want to check the fit as gaping cups and tight bands become more noticeable under form fitting tops and soft sweaters. The cups should never be noticeable, and if they are, it’s time to get a bra that fits! Many retailers offer a sizing guide. If you don’t know your underbust, bust, and cup measurements, you need to do that now. The difference between a bra that fits well and one that doesn’t is huge! There are some great, affordable options offering definition, support, and smoothing effects out there. Felina makes terrific bras in a variety of sizing, and often offers sales. And say what you will, but Target bras are some of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn, with soft, seamless tags and bands that don’t pinch. Third Love bras are amazing, and worth the splurge if you can!

In a season where leggings and jeggings reign supreme, it’s especially important to make sure your undies don’t pinch, and ideally they should provide a seamless look that helps you feel comfortable and confident all day. Underwear is such a personal topic, but it matters!

It’s worth noting that much like your makeup, wearing the wrong foundation can ruin a look!

I personally prefer to dress a little more modestly, and while I don’t want to draw attention to certain parts, wearing the wrong underwear and having it be visible under my outfits has the opposite effect #VPL! When your undies aren’t noticeable, no one should be looking! Consider investing in good, comfortable, breathable pieces you can feel confident in. Soma, Felina, and Natori offer great value and variety. Review size charts for any brand you consider, and again- take the time to know and understand your waist and hip measurements. Your clothes size doesn’t necessarily dictate your underwear size. I’m a 4-6, but have a 38” inch hip. While I usually wear a small in clothing sizes, I need a large underwear size in most brands. Too-small panties are a huge ‘NO’ under form fitting pants!

2) Speaking of investing in a solid foundation, let’s take some time to consider what essential pieces you’ll wear the most in Fall and Winter. For most of us that means: jeans, leggings, and boots. These are the pieces you’ll want to splurge on, or shop as meticulously as possible for. A great fitting pair of jeans and leggings will put together countless looks and should fit you perfectly, working with your body type to help you feel confident. I learned this lesson much later than I should have in life, and wish so much that I had learned it sooner. As a single mom on a budget, I usually grabbed jeans and pants from whatever was on sale, often in a size too small as I was fixated on the number on the tag instead of my own body’s measurements, usually too long for my short legs, and in unflattering cuts that were all the rage, but not for my age! (Like what I did there?) But seriously, I have a super fashionable friend whom I loooove, and she always looks fabulous in her jeans, even though she’s as short as I am. They always fit like a glove, no pocket bulge, no gaping, no muffin top. Her secret? Spend the money on good jeans. She’s actually expecting now, and her jeans still look fabulous on her because they work for her body! I also make sure to take care of my jeans by washing sparingly, and hang drying them. My personal favorite jeans will always be Levis, but I have a few Madewell and Lucky Brand jeans I love too. I love that Levi’s online allows you to shop for your precise waist and length. It makes a huge difference. If you need a good black skinny pant, try these Better Than Basic pants, you’ll love the fit and they’re made in the USA!

If, like me, you’re getting ready to sport boots all season long, make sure to find a great-fitting pair that you can walk comfortably in, are waterproof (or can be cleaned easily) and that suit your frame. Try on taller boots to make sure they fit your calves well and allow you to tuck in jeans easily (if you’re going for that look.) Thigh highs are trendy, but may not be a great option for all of us. I know they don’t work for me. If you need more room in the calves, many brands offer gorgeous wide calf options, including versatile boots with stretchy sides built in. Avoid too much hardware or “bling” on the boots to make sure they work well with a variety of looks, and aim for a classic, timeless look in good leather if you can. I’m partial to Frye and Nine West, but love the classic styling offered in other brands like Vince Camuto and Sam Edelman. Ariat makes high quality riding boots, as well as a more western looking boot and their items last a long time.

3)    One of the favorite trends for Fall is the oversized comfy cardigan.  Who can resist?  Soft, cozy, and chic.  When done right, this look is a seasonal classic that works well for everyone!  To pull the look off without looking frumpy, make sure to start with a form fitting base outfit to avoid adding bulk or visual weight to your look.  Try flattering leggings and slim fit jeans, with a form fitting, curve hugging top.  A monochrome look underneath  can provide a slimming effect too.  The oversized cardigan will already be large, so anything baggy, stiff, or in a cut that bunches up underneath will work against you and might make you look sloppy instead of casual and effortlessly chic.  For this look, it’s best to stick to leggings or jeggings as your base; and an open neck tee or tank.  Think of the cardigan as a soft finish to a sleek outfit.  Layer lightly and comfortably underneath to keep the look streamlined, and avoid thick scarves or high neck, loose tops that visual weight to your look.  Play around with boots and flats to see which extend the look of your legs with your various looks, I often find that a nice loafer often leans out my look.  My favorite cozy cardigan from the shop is here.

4) Dress appropriately for the weather. When you’re uncomfortable or cold, it’s noticeable and rather than looking stylish, you’ll usually look out of place. An unseasonably too-short dress, a top without appropriate sleeves, or a too-thin sweater will instantly signal your outfit as inappropriate and ill suited, when the goal should always be to feel comfortable and confident. As you transition into the season, and budgeting is a concern, consider maximizing the use of your wardrobe favorites by:

o   Adding opaque tights to a dress or skirt

o Layering a look with a light jacket or knit cardigan, a classic denim jacket also works wonders

o   Adding a layerable blazer to a warm weather top can extend its wear as well

o Some jumpers or sleeveless shift dresses work well with a turtleneck or snug long sleeve underneath

Ultimately, having a few versatile sweaters or light jackets for the season will be necessary (depending on your climate) and your look should feel appropriate for the season while keeping you comfortable. If you’re out shopping for sweaters to wear now, consider opting for lightweight materials that will transition well as the weather warms up again, to get the most value.

5) Lastly, layer up the right way. Soft, comfortable, lightweight tops are very affordable and easy to find. A good shaping cami with light compression is a great choice for an underlayer as well. You can always build and add to your tops with a light sweater, a jacket, and if necessary, a coat too. Your layers should feel great against your skin, especially if you’re moving around all day, and should allow for easy, unrestricted movement.

If you don’t already have a coat you love (and your climate calls for one) look for a coat in a length that suits your build and frame, allows for easy movement of the arms (I like to try on my coats and jackets wearing two layers,) and that pairs well with most of your wardrobe looks. Neutral colors (black, tan, beige, and grey) will give you the most use, and are always a great choice. My favorite camel coat and heather grey coat offer a great value and work well with all your Fall looks.

Fashion should always be fun, it speaks to others about who you are without saying a word.

No matter what you want to say, I hope these easy tips help you say: I’m confident, I’m comfortable in my skin, and I have great things to share with the world!
